Today is Memorial Day, and as such, the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000 specifically encourages us to pause for one minute in a symbolic act of unity to “remember and honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.” But if we ignore or conveniently forget the severe lessons of history, aren’t we effectively dishonoring their memory?
I offer up these valuable and timeless milestones of American history, so that we may avoid the danger of feigned patriotism in a cowardly turning away from the hard truths and reality of conflict, and honestly reflect on what is arguably the senseless loss of life.
