Revisiting and focusing on yesterday’s subject of Memorial Day, the National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000 specifically encourages us to pause for one minute in a symbolic act of unity to “remember and honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace.” So, since we are encouraged remember and honor the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces, the question naturally arises; how best can we remember them and honor their memory? The answer seems simple; by having an honest, in-depth conversation about the reality of their conscription, service, and unfortunate, untimely, and arguably needless death.
With this in mind, I wonder; does it make me ‘unpatriotic’ to question conflicts which benefit and enrich but a small few, while impoverishing and decimating an untold many? I don’t think so.
