AN ANALYSIS OF A BROOKINGS INSTITUTION PROGRAM ABOUT AN AUTHOR WHOSE NEW BOOK OUTLINES WHAT A CASHLESS SOCIETY WOULD LOOK LIKE, with apparent advocacy for such a tectonic change, is the subject of today’s show. Ron Avery joins host Mark Anderson in critiquing the Brookings presentation featuring Indian-born Cornell University Prof. Eswar Prasad, whose book is entitled, “The Future of Money: How the Digital Revolution is Transforming Currencies and Finance.” Of particular interest is the move toward “Central Bank Digital Currencies,” or CBDCs, wherein the central banks would convert what’s left of the cash economy into digital versions of the national currencies that they already control. Major concerns center on privacy, national sovereignty, and even national borders, as Mark and Ron discuss here but the Brookings program only addressed vaguely. Strangely absent was any Brookings discussion about how much “covid” played a role in setting the stage for going cashless, as was the idea of using digital currency/cashless systems to reward or punish people based on their covid vaccine status. Today’s show was video-simulcast to www.livestream.com/ronavery/stopthepresses and it includes actual audio-video footage of the Brookings program.
