Remember the immortal scene from “Treasure of the Sierra Madre” in which Humphrey Bogart, crouched behind a rock with his rifle, is accosted by bandalier-festooned Mexican federal police/banditos: “We are the Federales, zhoo know, the mounted poleece.” Demanding to see their badges, the gold-toothed leader shouts back from under his sombrero: “We don’t got to show you no badges. We don’t got no stinkin’ badges.” That great film, pronounced “culturally, historically, and aesthetically worthy of preservation” by a not-woke Library of Congress in 1990, was released in January of 1948. I remember that well, I was a 3-months-along unborn infant in my Nebraskan mom’s tummy in Brooklyn, New York. What brings this 1948 scene to mind today, August 10, 2022? Well, the 2022 “Federales (banditos?)” said exactly the same thing to Donald Trump’s attorney, Christina Bobb, as they lawlessly raided Mar-A-Lago two days ago. When Bobb demanded to see a warrant for their banditry, the F.B.I. agent replied (you can’t make this stuff up): “You know (zhoo know), we don’t have to show you a (stinkin’?) warrant.”
