Did you know that only 3% of the people of Taiwan are Chinese? And these are not the native or ancient people of Taiwan, but are the small number of actual Chinese who left China with Chiang Kai-shek after the Communist takeover of China in 1949. I had no idea, until I read today, Feb. 11, 2025, an article by the brilliant Gordon Chang in The Epoch Times. Chang also clued me in that Taiwan has, for all of its history, been independent of China. Chang’s purpose in the article was to persuade Elon Musk (and Donald Trump) that the right and smart thing for a Peace President to do would be to DETER a catastrophic war between the Communist Chinese Army and the Taiwanese, who are over 100 miles off the Chinese coast. The best deterrence, Chang avers, would arise from a show of real military muscle behind the Taiwanese defenses.
