If the Red Chinese attempt to strangle Hong Kong, could it be possible that the American and British and French food and fuel relief flights of the Berlin Blockade, instituted by the Bolshevik Communists, be repeated? The U.S. had only 9,000 U.S. troops in West Berlin. The Soviets had 1.5 million troops blockading Berlin. The U.S. Army had largely been disbanded after World War II. Not so with Stalin. As deterrent, the U.S. had only 50 Fat Man atomic bombs that could be carried by only 35 ready B-29s, and even fewer trained crews! The Soviet dilemna was whether they were prepared to shoot down unarmed C-47s and C-54s carrying food and fuel to the Berliners, who had only a 36-day supply of food in June 1948. A ballsy, shall we say Trumpian, move by Truman….that worked. 278,000 flights and a year-and-a-half later, the Soviets gave up their blockade of West Berlin. I was 18 days old the day the Berlin Airlift began. Now, on May 25, 2020, I’m 71 and the new Cold War is already underway, as the Maoist Red Chinese show their hand in what has been a full-fledged war against America by them for decades.
