On November 19, 2018 Donald Trump has just visited the unfortunate folks burned out in the hills of Malibu and the Sierra by the latest fires. As someone who grew up in Malibu (before it was expensive) and also in the northern California hills, I have a seldom-heard insight into why the burned-out people are so predominantly White folks. It goes back to WHY these White folks moved out into the hills in the first place. Why did they? Easy answer….White flight. Across America, in every single large city in America, White folks who used to love and live in the downtowns that they built over centuries….fled outward as non-European invasion destroyed the downtown of every single large American city. And those unfortunate burned-out folks in the hills are one portion of that White flight. They are living up two-lane winding roads through steep fire-trap hills where their ancestors would never have dreamed of building homes. But their ancestors lived in a 90% White America in which they also never dreamed of having to move out of their own cities and towns.
