U.S. Lawmakers Push FAA for Timely BVLOS Rule Implementation
October 28, 2024
Secretary Buttigieg and Administrator Whitaker:
As you know, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 became law on May 16, 2024.
Section 930 of the Act directed the FAA to establish a performance-based framework for BVLOS
operations of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This section requires the publication of a
notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) within four months of enactment and a final rule within
twenty months of enactment. The deadline to issue an NPRM has passed, and it is now our
understanding that the proposed rule may not be issued until January 2025, at the earliest.
It is concerning the failure to comply with statutory instructions may also result in the delay of a final
rule.

DOD Officials Approve East Coast UAS and AAM Test Corridor
(flyingmag.com – Jun 2, 2023)
Government agencies are developing a prototype testing and evaluation corridor for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM) technologies.
The cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) between NARTP, USTRANSCOM, and AMC calls for the entities to build a prototype UAS and AAM corridor connecting New Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL) to Delaware’s Dover Air Force Base, a distance of about 78 miles.
On Thursday, the National Aerospace Research and Technology Park (NARTP), a collection of research and development facilities located just outside Atlantic City, New Jersey, announced an agreement to develop a UAS and AAM testing corridor backed by two Department of Defense entities. Once complete, the corridor could foster emerging aviation technologies such as drones and air taxis.
